The Head Project is an art experiment designed to inspire creativity, collaboration and social awareness on a worldwide scale.
The first step in participating in the project is to fill out an application
Upon receiving a head, each contributor is given two weeks to do as they wish, minus destruction of the head. Some heads are used as props in photos while others have attended weddings, been on the news, gone on roadtrips or taken on tour, been kidnapped, kissed, scanned in 3D etc. As more contributors become involved in the project, the list of head firsts gets longer and more interesting.
At the end of the two weeks the contributor packs up the head and ships it off to the next person in line. The head could be shipped around the world or to the house next door.
After finding a mannequin head in a bin at my local thrift shop, I was inspired by projects like the 1000journals project and thought it might be fun to mail the mannequin head around the world and document its journey as it made its way from person to person.
The website launched on December 7th, 2002 and within only a few weeks, I had received hundreds of emails from people all over the world asking if they could participate.
The growth of the project has been slow but in the last 7 years I’ve added heads, lost heads, laughed, cried, spent more time than I’d like to admit working on the website, given up completely and always returned with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration and it’s been an amazing adventure thus far!
There’s also A LOT more great stuff on the way!
