Head First Awards

head_first_image

With nearly 40 contributors and over six years of Head Project, we’ve seen a lot of interesting things. Our heads have inspired nudity, attended weddings, been pregnant, interviewed on foreign television, kissed numerous times, scanned by a 3D scanner, smuggled into the office of a foreign public official, sacrificed by troll dolls and arrested … and that’s just to name a few!

In the process we’ve noticed both a number of firsts as well as a number of ongoing themes and in an effort to recognize those contributors who truly were the very first to do something and to inspire future contributors to push their creative boundaries and think outside the box, we’ve created the HEAD FIRST AWARDS!

So where do the firsts come from you ask? A contributor can receive a Head First Award for just about anything so long as we feel it’s worthy of being recognized. This means anything from being the first contributor from a specific country, the first photo of a head next to a cow or the first head in outer space. Early on there will be a LOT of firsts but as the project continues to gain momentum the chances of getting a Head First Award will become more difficult and ultimately require greater creativity on the part of the contributor.

So next time you’re browsing our evergrowing list of amazing contributors, you may discover a few of them have received a “HEAD FIRST AWARD.” Show some respect and take your shoes off at the door. And if you’re ever lucky enough to be in the company of a HEAD FIRST WINNER, the least you can do is offer to buy ‘em a drink… because you are in the presence of a winner.

The Futur(istika) of Istanbul

We’ve got some exciting news from THP HQ! A few months ago we were contacted by the creators/editors of Futuristika Magazine out of Istanbul. They were interested in being a part of the project as well as featuring The Head Project in their next quarterly print issue of Futuristika Magazine!

As it had been a long while since I’d really put any effort into moving heads, it took a bit longer than expected to get them a head they could play with but in the end, the lovely Najla Alkuwari from Doha, Qatar sent them a head along with, it seems, a number of small gifts for the new contributors!

This lovely act by Najla has inspired the folks at Futuristika to continue the trend and when their time comes to pass on the head, they too will add something.

We can’t wait to see what comes out of Istanbul and the Futuristika family!

And for the record, this is the first time for the Head Project in Turkey!!

Site Updates!

It’s 3am, my eyes are bloodshot, my brain has congealed, I’ve been working on the site for hours and there’s STILL no word on where (at least) two of our heads have gone…

But does this mean we sit idle? NO! We’ve taken this time to do some well needed work on the website. One of the first things you’ll notice is there’s a lot more going on down in our sidebar. For the last few months we’ve been trying to come up with the BEST way to navigate our contributors and their work and yup, we think we’re just about there.

Now, not only can you discover the most recent contributors by checking out our Contributor List, you can also browse by country or head just by clicking in our sidebar! We’ll be mucking about with added functionality over the next few weeks… don’t get too comfortable.

Another big change is that from now on, we’ll be storing MOST of the contributors work right here on the website. Although we lose traffic from sites like Flickr, it was our intention to make navigation easier and we’re pretty confident this does the trick. Now there’s no bouncing back and forth between Flickr and our website and/or getting lost in between. Obviously, we still encourage contributors to upload their work to Flickr as well.. it’s a great way to spread the word about the project.

Feel free to post a comment if you find a glitch, error or just have an opinion about the new navigation features.

Thanks for your continued support.

Postal (lack of)Service

We’re just waiting, folks. All of the heads are currently in ‘transition’ between contributors. We do have two heads, both of which were mailed to contributors within the U.S. (one of which even the same state) and they’ve been missing for more than a week now. I’ve checked with the previous contributors and have their word they’ve both been mailed out but I must admit, I can’t figure out why it’s taking so long. Sure, it’s the holiday season but it’s got to be something more than that.

… we’ll make an update when we hear something. For now, we just wait (like usual)

Headguy Salary

A Google search for “The Head Project” turned up this jewel… SimplyHired.com claims the average salary for a Head Project Coordinator is $57k per year.

We can assure you… this is incorrect.

We’ve been Bloggered

Head 006 quickly made its way from Janet Lackey to Sophie Pellegrini and Sophie has already taken a few photos. Although she’s only posted one to her Flickr, she’s posted a number of others on her blog.

We also discovered a nice write-up about The Head Project on this blog. It’s in Portugese (we think) but with the help of a translator, we were able to read most of it. Either way, it’s fun to see people talking about the project!

no touchy

We’re pretty sure we broke a bunch of links on the site… if you find one, just ignore it… move along.. nothing to see. We’re working on it. Thanks.

Headguy on Flickr

For reasons of continuity, we’ll be doing some housekeeping on Flickr as well. In the next couple of days, we’ll be deleting our current ‘Head Project’ account and Headguy will get his very own Flickr (cue scary music)

If you’re thinking to yourself, “Why would they do this?” the answer is quite simple. Flickr has always been a great platform for contributors to share and store their Head Project contributions. But we never really intended to have “The Head Project” on Flickr as an entity because well… that’s what we have a website for. So, with the simple fact that Headguy does most of the correspondence, we thought it’d be a good idea to give him his own Flickr account to use for that very purpose.

So check out the new Headguy Flickr
Be sure to add him as a contact!

What do you think?

Please take your time to read and answer the poll question on our front page. We really do care what you think.

Housekeeping

As some of you may have noticed, in the last couple of months, we’d added a few features to the website only to remove them now. Due to them getting little (or no) response we feel it’s best, for the time being at least, to remove these items from the website. In the coming weeks, we will be doing a small amount of additional housekeeping in an effort to make the site more organized. – Management
