We initially contacted Emma Lee because we fell in love with her quirky photos over at Stripped Media. Although largely focused on music portraiture, we thought her style was something we hadn’t yet seen with The Head Project.

Little did we know then, Emma is also a musician and it was right around the time we invited her to take part in the project that her music career picked up. And so it went, we received an email from Emma flooded with regret that she’d be unable to participate… unless we agreed to let her take the head on tour for a full month! There was no way we would pass up the opportunity for a head to make its way across Canada so we happily agreed. Our only request was that while on tour she wrote down a few thoughts about what it was like traveling across the country with a mannequin head.

We’re still waiting on some commentary to go along with the photos she sent us but… not long after getting her photos we DID receive an email from someone saying they had heard about the project at one of Emma Lee’s shows!

We can only imagine what her audience thought.

Najla originally contacted us after one of her Flickr friends uploaded a few of their own photos to the project. But to be completely honest, we have no idea who it was. No matter.

Our decision to allow Najla to participate in the project was based on two things. First, she lives in Doha, Qatar and honestly, how many chances would we have to get a head to Qatar? Second, in her email Najla said, “It is such a great way to explore other’s creativity and style of life that is portrayed in their art, and it gives you an insight to the part culture plays in one’s way of expression.”

We’d always hoped the project could act as a window into other cultures and not just become an odd addition to the history of photography. As far as we are concerned, Najla Alkuwari is really the first contributor to accomplish this. Her time with the head is as much experimental as it is a ’show-and-tell,’ exposing the viewer to both her physical and spiritual surroundings.

Matthew Burditt is a Vancouver based fashion and beauty photographer and if you were to take a look at his Flickr you’d notice a lot of beautiful people and a lot of beautiful light.

Although we wouldn’t have said no to a combination of the two, he certainly delivered in the beautiful light/colors category with his contributions to the project. Matthew also tossed in two slightly voyeuristic black & white photos which stray a bit from his seemingly standard style but we’re okay with that. Here at The Head Project, we love when contributors use one of our heads as an excuse to branch out and take a breather from their usual stuff! And that’s we all we’ve got to say about that.

We recently discovered not only is Matthew a photographer, he runs Oak Clothing on Etsy, a line of custom and couture clothing focusing on distinctive tee’s, with a fresh approach to DIY. Sadly his shop is currently closed, at least until Fall/Winter 09, but everyone should keep an eye on his work!

We discovered Sophie on Flickr… or maybe she discovered us, we don’t remember. Regardless, Sophie is one of many young, talented, female photographers making a name for themselves on Flickr and after looking through her collection of work, we couldn’t help but want to send her a head.

It just so happens, Sophie had the same problem that many of our contributors have when the box finally arrives at their door… all of the ideas they had BEFORE the head arrived and all of the creativity the project inspires disappear and they’re left trying to figure out how to best utilize the two weeks they have. It just so happens the photo we love best from her set was a total accident. Sophie said, “I didnt realize the head was there until after I took a few shots. That wasnt meant to be the photo. I think its cool, when things work out that way. Anyway, I’m happy I finally got another headshot.”

Happy accidents or not, we’re glad Sophie had a chance to participate in the project and we’ll be keeping an eye on her work.

Michael Howard is part photographer, part filmmaker, part father and part lover of cereal. He also runs a film company called, Invisible Productions, which has produced a number of documentaries and short films.

About his work Michael said, “So I finished my part of [The Head Project] and ended up with five photos total. One idea was abandoned and I just didn’t have time within the two weeks to get the other things done that I wanted. The last few I did were the bigger set pieces where I did lighting setups and such. The one with the toybox and height sign were just playing around.”

Oddly enough, we actually encourage playing around.

J. Wesley Brown, an artist known well for his photographs of Los Angeles in the quiet moments between sleep and waking. He was selected as a winner of the Magenta Foundation’s Emerging Photographer Competition 2009, Flash Forward as well as had work featured in Artworks Magazine.

Predominantly a night photographer, J. Wesley Brown didn’t stray from the look and feel of his other shots. Though, when it came time to shoot H-005, we were surprised to see that two of the three photos he sent us were taken indoors as the bulk of Brown’s photographic work is created ‘on the street’ in Los Angeles. We suppose he just needed some quiet time with the head. Hell, we can’t blame him. The streets of LA are a scary place at night and when you add a dismembered head to the equation, anything goes!

We’re curious, when you microwave a head, what setting do you use? Baked potato?
